Trans fatty acids are unsaturated fatty acids that have negative effects on human health. Some countries or regions have listed trans fatty acids as core nutrients and requested mandatory labelling. Food companies often indicate there is no trans fatty acids in their products as a selling point.

SATURATED FAT-FREE

If the sum of saturated fat and trans-fatty acids does not exceed 0.1 g of saturated fat per 100 g or 100 mL.

Claim

Requirement of the content

Free Saturated and trans fatty acids

The food contains no detectable saturated fatty acids; and the food contains no detectable trans fatty acids.

Low Saturated and trans fatty acids

The food contains no more saturated and trans fatty acids than 1.5 g/100 g for solid food or 0.75 g/100 mL for liquid food.

Reduced or Light / Lite Saturated and trans fatty acids

The food contains at least 25% less saturated and trans fatty acids than in the same amount of reference food; and both saturated and trans fatty acids are reduced relative to the same amount of reference food.
