1. Nutrition Labeling and Nutrition Facts
1.1 Definitions
Nutrition Labeling refers to the description on the labels of prepackaged foods to provide food nutrition information and properties to consumers, including Nutrition Facts, Nutrition Claims, and Nutrient Function Claims. Nutrition Labeling is a part of the labeling of prepackaged foods.
Nutrition Facts refer to the normative list indicating the name, content, and percentage of the Nutrient Reference Value (NRV) of nutritional components in food.
1.2 Relationship between Nutrition Labels and Nutrition Facts
As can be seen from the above definition, Nutrition Labeling includes Nutrition Facts. If a nutrition claim or nutrient function claim is indicated on the label, it is also included in Nutrition Labeling.
2. Essential Elements of Nutrition Facts
Nutrition Facts included 5 essential elements: title, nutrient name, nutrient content, NRV%, and the square frame.
(1) Title
The title shall be named as “Nutrition Facts”.
(2) Energy and name of nutritional components
Energy and the name of nutritional components shall be labeled as the specification of Table 1 in GB 28050.
(3) Content of nutritional components
The content of nutritional components refers to the content value and expression units of a nutritional component, e.g. Energy (KJ).
(4) NRV%
NRV% refers to the percentage of Nutrient Reference Value (NRV) of the nutritional component or energy.
(5) The square frame
Nutrition Facts shall be adopting a table or corresponding form.
3. Summary
Nutrition Labeling is an important channel for consumers to understand the nutritional information of prepackaged food.
