The Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority (APVMA) recently released its final regulatory decision on the reassessment of diazinphos. Diazinon is an insecticide and acaricide widely used in agriculture, horticulture, commerce and veterinary medicine to control pests.
In this decision, APVMA changed and confirmed the registrations of four chemical products and their labeling approvals with at least one use authorized; cancelled one active ingredient approval and 15 registrations and associated labeling approvals for chemical products that did not meet statutory safety, trade, or labeling standards; and changed and confirmed the remaining two active ingredient approvals to update the conditions of approval.
According to the September 10, 2024 Special Bulletin, the cancelled products and changed products with previously approved labels are permitted to be held, stored, used, and supplied for a period of one year from the date of cancellation. Specific guidance on possession, custody, use and supply is provided in the Special Bulletin.
A detailed summary of supported or unsupported uses of diazinon has been posted on the APVMA website, as well as a summary of the underlying risk assessment in the Diazinon Final Review Technical Report.
