The Chilean government recently confirmed that General Administration of Customs of China has announced the lifting of the ban on poultry imports from Chile. At the end of March last year, China suspended imports of Chilean poultry meat due to an outbreak of bird flu in Chile.
Chilean Radio Bío Bío's website reported that the Chilean Agricultural and Livestock Bureau (SAG), the Office of Agricultural Research and Policy (Odepa) and the Meat Exporters Association (ChileCarne) agreed that this decision will have a positive impact on the Chilean poultry industry, which is of great significance to the Chilean economy.
A statement issued by the Chilean Ministry of Agriculture said that the re-entry of Chilean poultry meat companies into the Chinese market is key to re-establishing trade flows between Chile and China and ensuring the continuity of the Chilean industry's value chain.
Juan Carlos Domínguez, president of the Chilean Meat Exporters Association, said China is the third largest export market for Chilean poultry meat. Public and private organizations have worked together for 20 months to restart poultry meat exports to China, and the governments of Chile and China maintain a smooth dialogue. “Exports boost the industry's competitiveness and are the driving force behind its continued growth.” He said.
According to statistics, Chile exported over 34,300 tons of poultry meat to China from January 2022 to March 2023, making China the third largest export market for Chilean poultry meat during this period, accounting for 15% of its total exports.
The main poultry products exported from Chile to China are poultry by-products, such as necks, feet, claws, rumps, skins and frozen bone-in pieces. Poultry by-products are in high demand in the Chinese market, and in 2022, Chile exported $107 million (FOB) of poultry meat to China, underscoring the strategic position of the Chinese market for the Chilean poultry meat industry.
