EU revised protein-related requirements for infant formula and formula for older infants produced from Protein Hydrolysates

On October 11, 2024, the European Commission issued Implementing Regulation (EU) 2024/2684 amending Appendices I, II and III of Implementing Regulation (EU) 2016/127 on the protein-related requirements for infant formula and formula for larger infants produced from protein hydrolysates. The main contents are as follows:

  

(1) The minimum and maximum values of protein content required under different protein-related requirement groups. For example: Minimum: 0.44g/100 kJ (1.86g/100 kcal) for group A; Maximum: 0.67g/100kJ (2.8g/100 kcal), and so on;

  

(2) Protein source: desalted sweet whey protein extracted from milk after enzymatic precipitation of casein using rennet; whey protein derived from milk, etc;

  

(3) Indispensable and conditionally indispensable amino acids and L-carnitine content: the L-carnitine content should be at least equal to 0.3mg/100kJ (1.2mg/100kcal).
