On October 16, 2024, Brazil's National Health Surveillance Agency released its monitoring report on additives and contaminants in food for the period 2021-2023. The main contents are as follows:
(1) In the analysis of food additives, Potassium bromate is a banned additive in Brazil. Potassium bromate was found in 4 and 6 unqualified samples in 2021 and 2022-2023, respectively.
(2) The main violations of artificial colors are related to the identification of additives on the product label, and the pigments are identified in some samples, but are not described on the label;
(3) Sulfites: only in the biennium 2022-2023, sulfites were tested, 698 samples were analyzed, of which 415 were beef, 283 were pork, and sulfites were found in 13 samples;
(4) Cadmium metal: 100 samples were monitored in 2021 and no abnormalities were observed. In 2022-2023, 174 samples were analyzed, of which 100 were chocolate samples, and 12 were found to exceed the standard. The analysis showed that the more cocoa in chocolate, the higher the concentration of metal.
(5) Ochratoxin A: From 2021, 44 samples were analyzed and 1 case exceeded the standard; from 2022 to 2023, 187 samples were analyzed and 6 coffee samples and 4 raisins samples exceeded the standard.
