The Agence du Niger reported on 16 October that the Secretary-General of the Government of the Niger had indicated that the President of the National Council for the Defense of the Fatherland had signed a decree banning the export of cereals, including rice, semolina, millet, sorghum, cowpeas and maize.

The press release stated that the ban was imposed to protect the domestic market but did not apply to Mali and Burkina Faso, members of the Union of Sahelian States. The Government is considering appropriate measures to guarantee fair returns to producers. The National Council for the Defense of the Homeland has requested the Minister of Commerce and Industry, regional governors, prefects and municipal administrators to strictly enforce the ban. Anyone who violates this measure will have their goods confiscated and handed over to the General Directorate of Materials of the Niger (OPVN).
