Australia revised sugar content claim requirements for food labeling

On October 28, 2024, Notice F2024L01376 was published in the Commonwealth of Australia Gazette amending the requirements for sugar content claims on food labels (i.e., approving Proposal P1063) with effect from the date of publication. Key elements:

  

(1) Replaces the existing definition of sugar in the original requirement annotation with a new definition of sugar; and removes the annotation from the definition of sugar;

  

(2) Revise the claims related to sugar and no added sugar to provide that a food may be claimed to have no added sugar if no sugar is added to the composition of the food or if the sugar content of the solid food is ≤10g/100g or the sugar content of the liquid food is ≤7.5g/100ml.
