China has strict regulations on animal and plant raw materials that can be used in food production, including common food raw materials, food additives, new food raw materials, health food raw materials, and edible food strains. In recent years, incidents in which companies have been sued for non-compliance with food ingredients have occurred. According to the statistics of the Foodmate, in 2017, there were more than 400 cases in which the court decided to compensate the accuser for the non-compliance of raw materials. Specific reasons include the use of non-food ingredients, the use of raw materials not permitted by standard or regulations, and the over-use of food additives.
 
Infants and young children supplemented with onions were sentenced to ten times compensation
In October 2017, consumers found Germany's "Enlitong lasagna Vegetable Mud" 12 bottles and "Enlitong macaroni Cream Broccoli Mud" products marked as infant canned Auxiliary food,the ingredients table contains onions in Beijing Carrefour supermarket. Article 5.1 of the National Food Safety Standards for Infant and Children's Canned Foods (GB10770-2010) clearly states that no spicy and condiments should be used, but onions are included in the name of Spices and Condiments (GB/T12729. 1-2008) and "Classification of Natural Spices" (GB/T12725-2008), so the above foods have serious safety hazards. After the trial, the court supported the consumer’s ten-time compensation claim.
Food ingredient compliance is a pre-requisite for food compliance. Food companies must be familiar with China's standard regulations on food ingredients and use food ingredients that meet national regulations.
