  • The Australia New Zealand Food Standards Agency was established under the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Act (1991). It is an independent non-governmental organization responsible for formulating and maintaining food standards applicable to Australia and New Zealand. In the process of formulating standards, other government departments can participate in related content. For example, the Office of the Gene Technology Regulation of Australia participates in the management of genetically modified organic standards, involving genetically modified crops and animals used for food production. The Australian Agriculture and Veterinary Medicines Administration (APVMA) participated in the formulation of the maximum residue limits of agricultural and veterinary drugs that only apply to Australia, and they are included in the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code. In addition, the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Agency is also responsible for food recall related work in Australia.
