On November 30, staff at a poultry farm in Tottori City found about 40 dead chickens suspected of an outbreak of avian influenza. Genetic tests confirmed the presence of a highly pathogenic strain of HPAI. Quarantine has been imposed on chicken and egg shipments within three kilometers of the source of the infection and a ban on shipments beyond 10 kilometers.

Since autumn, there have been outbreaks in Okayama, Kagawa-ken, Miyagi, Aomori, Kagoshima, Wakayama and Hokkaido prefectures. Since the first outbreak in Japan, 2.9 million chickens have been culled.
