On July 6, 2023, the Food Authority of Singapore (SFA) released news that the Singapore media responded to the safety of imported Fukushima food.
The SFA adopts a science-based approach to risk assessment and management of food safety and develops food safety standards that are consistent with international standards. The SFA regularly reviews food import conditions to ensure food safety.
From May 28, 2021, the SFA conducted a food safety assessment and removed the requirements for pre-export testing and certificates of origin for approved food imports from Fukushima. The State Forestry Administration has been closely monitoring food imports from Japan, and the monitoring results are satisfactory. Since 2013, the SFA has not detected any radioactive contaminants in food imported from Japan.
Food imports from Japan have also been consistently less than 1.5% of Singapore's total imports over the past decade, while imports from Fukushima Prefecture are negligible (less than 0.01% of total food imports in 2022).
The SFA will continue to closely monitor food imports from Japan to ensure that they meet Singapore's food safety requirements. SFA will also continue to diversify its common food sources to mitigate the impact of supply disruptions.
