According to Vietnamese media, the Plant Protection Bureau of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development of Vietnam said that the General Administration of Customs of China will conduct field visits in mid-August to farms and processing plants that plan to export coconuts to China.
The Plant Protection Bureau of Vietnam issued a document to the provincial and municipal departments of Agriculture and Rural Development, suggesting that each region should improve the documents required by the General Administration of Customs of China and assign technical personnel to support and guide the farms and processing plants to be inspected. After the completion of the inspection, the General Administration of Customs of China will improve the pest risk assessment of Vietnamese coconuts and use it as the basis for signing the protocol on the import of coconuts from Vietnam.
Coconut prices in Vietnam have plummeted in recent years due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Vietnamese coconuts have been exported to the Chinese market through border trade and other ways, and in recent years, they have sought to realize export through positive trade channels to increase the price of coconuts.
At present, Vietnam's coconut cultivation area exceeds 180,000 hectares, ranking seventh in the world in terms of production, and exports of coconuts and coconut products exceed 900 million US dollars. Coconut cultivation in Vietnam is mainly located in the Central Coast and Mekong Delta regions such as Ben Tre and Tra Vinh provinces.
Ben Tre currently has 78,000 hectares of coconut cultivation, making it the largest province in Vietnam. More than 70% of the province's population relies on coconut cultivation for a living, and the output value of coconut products accounts for 20.69% of the province's total industrial output value and 42.51% of the total local exports. Ben Tre Coconut products are sold to nearly 100 countries and regions, including markets in Europe, the United States and the Middle East.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, the price of Ben Tre coconuts fell to 1,000 VND /, equivalent to less than 0.3 yuan. Although the Chinese market reopened this year, local coconut prices have rebounded, but it is still difficult to export, a large backlog, many coconut forests have been abandoned, and coconut trees have been cut down.
With the signing of the protocol on the export of Vietnamese coconuts to China on the agenda, Vietnamese coconuts are expected to receive official access soon. Just last month, domestic food and beverage company Happy Home has already deployed in advance, announcing an investment of $18.3561 million in the construction of a coconut water production plant in Vietnam. It is expected that after the official entry of Vietnamese coconuts, export prices will also be increased and stabilized.
