On February 28, 2024, the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) released its 2023 annual report on food recalls. In 2023, FSIS issued 65 recalls totaling 4005,384 pounds (about 1,816,811 kilograms) of food. This includes 58 Class I recalls (those that pose the most immediate threat to public health) and seven Class II recalls. Common causes of recall are listed in the table below.
Pork (18 times), beef (16 times), mixed meat (15 times), and chicken (12 times) were the most affected breeds. Goats, sheep/lambs, siluroformes and turkeys have each caused one recall.
Regarding Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA), FSIS issued 24 recalls, 14 of which were for undeclared allergens.
Foreign substances, Listeria monocytogenes, and processing deviations resulted in two types of PHA, respectively, while unsanitary conditions, mislabeling, pseudomonas, and uninspected production resulted in each type of PHA. The species behind PHA include pure meat (7 PHAs), mixed (6), pure poultry (4), beef (2), chicken (2), pig (2), and catfish (1).
