Zimbabwe is a major producer of blueberries in Southern Africa, with the main export destinations being the European Union and the United Kingdom. Now that Zimbabwe is seeking access to the Chinese market, the local blueberry industry and growers are considering expanding their investments in preparation for exports to the Chinese market.
Edwin Moyo, who grows and exports blueberries, owns a blueberry farm east of Harare, Zimbabwe's capital, and exports the berries mainly to South Africa and Europe. Moyo said it is very optimistic about the Chinese market and plans to arrange the export of blueberries as soon as they enter China. At present, Moyo is expanding the scale of the farm, which is expected to reach 200 hectares, all for export to China.
Zimbabwean blueberries begin to mature in May, earlier than other southern hemisphere competitors. On July 1, 2022, Zimbabwean citrus was granted customs access, which is the only fresh fruit in the country currently granted access to China. In October 2023, Zimbabwean citrus arrived in China for the first time, and more than 40 cartons of citrus were successfully shipped to China in the first year.
In addition to blueberries, Zimbabwe is also in discussions with China about exporting avocados to the country. At the same time, Zimbabwe also hopes to export pecans, peppers and sesame seeds to China.
