On November 8, 2024, the Codex Alimentarius Commission (CAC) International issued Consultation document CL2024/88-CAC, and proposed to revise the standard for allergen labeling. The comment period is open until November 20, 2024 for comments. The main revisions include:

(1) Revision of the definition of a food allergen as a food (including ingredients, food additives, and processing aids) that can elicit other specific immune-mediated responses in susceptible populations, usually caused by proteins or protein derivatives in foods;

(2) Foods and ingredients subject to declaration require the addition of the scientific name of the allergenic ingredient; the use of a single fish or crustacean name is permitted in lieu of the designation “fish” or “crustacean,” e.g., salmon in place of fish; and the use of the name of an individual fish or crustacean is permitted when the concentration of sulfite in the food When the concentration of sulphite in a food reaches or exceeds 10mg/kg, the designated name “sulphite” or “sulfite” should always be used for ingredient name identification.
