Brazil issues two regulations on fortification of food

 
On February 16, 2022, the Brazilian Government Gazette published RDC Resolution No. 604 to formulate two provisions for nutritional fortification in food. The specific contents include:

(1) Iodine-fortified salt (iodine-enriched salt): the iodine source should be compound potassium iodate, the iodine content of the fortified product should be between 15-45mg/kg, and the product label should be marked "The iodine content of this product is 15-45mg/kg" near the nutrition fact;

(2) Wheat flour and corn flour fortified with iron and folic acid: the source of iron fortification is ferrous fumarate and other compounds, and the fortified source of folic acid is N-pteroyl-L-valley Amino acid, the final content of iron in the fortified product is 4-9 mg/kg, and the content of folic acid is 140-220 μg/kg. The product label should include "Adding iron and folic acid to flour is an effective way to prevent infant deformities and anemia during pregnancy" etc.

The resolution will take effect from March 2, 2022.
