Brazil revised standard regulations for the use of food additives

On 12 March 2024, the Brazilian National Health Surveillance Agency (ANVISA) published through the Official Gazette Directive IN No 286, which amends the standard regulations for the use of food additives (i.e., Directive IN No 211). The specific contents are:


(1) Revision of the definition of food emulsifiers, i.e., food additives that are added to foods to rearrange proteins to avoid fat stratification;


(2) Adding new requirements for the use of various food additives such as propylene glycol in some foods, some of which are shown in the table below.


The Directive will enter into force on 1 April 2024, with a transition period of 18 months.
