UK issued rules on labeling and sales of poultry meat in HPAI protection zones

On 4 November 2022, the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) issued the "Rules for marking, sourcing, cutting, transporting and storing fresh meat and meat products". The Rules set out comprehensive and clear provisions on the scope of restricted poultry meat, specific labeling of restricted poultry meat, the separation of the whole process of production, processing, storage and transportation of restricted poultry meat from non-restricted poultry meat, the designated types and requirements of enterprises slaughtering restricted poultry meat, the disposal standards of waste and by-products, and the import and export of restricted poultry meat. The scope of application is as follows:

(1) poultry meat from protected areas;

(2) poultry meat that has been declared come from a protected area after slaughter and after the earliest date of infection at the relevant epidemic point as determined by an official veterinarian;

(3) poultry meat that is not separated from the above two types of poultry meat;

(4) All meat and meat products produced for human consumption from poultry meat production in the above areas.
