On November 21, 2022, the Food Safety Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) released a draft standard for genetically modified (GM) food with a 60-day feedback period. The main contents include:

(1) The scope of application of the regulation includes genetically modified organisms (GMO) used in food, food raw materials derived from GMO (with or without modified DNA);

(2) The manufacture, packaging, storage, sale and import of genetically modified food shall apply for a license from FSSAI in advance, and FSSAI shall make a decision on whether to grant the license within 6 months according to the evaluation results;

(3) GMO and food raw materials derived from GMO (containing modified DNA) shall not be added to baby food;

(4) GMF labeling requirements: foods containing more than 1% GMF should be labeled as "containing GMF" on the front label.
