Argentina revises labelling requirements for cultured aquatic products

On 1 December 2022, the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries of Argentina issued joint resolution No. 11/2022, amending the labelling requirements of the Argentine Codex Alimentarius on cultured aquatic products. The main contents are as follows:


(1) To amend the definition of aquaculture products. Refers to all products of cultured aquatic vertebrates and invertebrates;


(2) Packaging labels of aquaculture products intended for consumption by the end consumer, whether refrigerated or frozen, smoked or preserved, shall indicate that the product is cultured. On the label next to the marketing description of the product, identify the following terms: "aquaculture products";


(3) For aquaculture products, it means that the weight of the aquaculture products accounts for more than half of the aquaculture period or the aquaculture time exceeds half of the aquaculture period. For shellfish, the aquaculture stage is at least six months. The place of production and the province of production must be indicated;

(4) A transitional period of 180 days shall be granted from the date of entry into force of the resolution.

This resolution shall enter into force on the date of its publication in the Official Gazette of the Argentine Republic.
