Canning and Pickled Vegetables are regulated in South Africa

On 2 December 2022, the Department of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development of South Africa issued Notice No. 2826 by Government Gazette No. 47634, setting out the Food Regulations on Canned and Pickled Vegetables for Sale in the South African Market. The main contents of the regulations include: Applicable product scope (imported or South African domestic vegetable products that have been heat-sterilized or pickled), product classification, terms and definitions, general requirements for canned and pickled vegetable products (such as raw materials meeting inspection and quarantine health requirements, safe and clean processing process, raw and auxiliary materials addition meeting regulatory requirements, etc.), sensory quality requirements and grading standards for 26 types of canned and pickled vegetable products, production Sanitary management regulations for the whole process of processing, microbial hygiene standards for final products (such as salmonella, Escherichia coli, Clostridium botulinum and Staphylococcus aureus shall not be detected), internal and external packaging and labeling regulations for products (labels shall indicate product name, type, grade, country of origin, manufacturer and production date, etc.), sampling and inspection, etc.

 

The standard will take effect from the date of publication of the government Gazette.
