China has seen a sharp increase in shrimp imports since the tariff reduction, with imports increasing year on year from 54,700 tons worth $307 million in 2012 to 720,442 tons worth $4.46 billion in 2019.
After the pandemic outbreak, China's annual imports of shrimp dropped to 613,100 tons, worth $3.45 billion, before recovering to 658,000 tons, worth $4.04 billion, in 2021.
In the first half of 2022, the monthly import volume was higher than that of 2021, and the July-September volume increased further. The import volume in the first nine months of 2022 continued to expand, with the import volume of 661,822 tons compared with the same period in 2021, up 51.6 percent year-on-year, and the import value of $4.42 billion, up 71 percent year-on-year.
In the first nine months of this year, China's imports of shrimp products from Ecuador increased by 59 percent, those from India by 21 percent, those from Vietnam by 123 percent, and those from Canada and other channels by 60 percent.
