According to coffee export data recently released by the Panamanian Ministry of Industry and Commerce (MICI), mainland China is the largest buyer of Panamanian coffee.
Panama's "Liberty Metropolis Daily" reported on February 22 that according to data, the average annual export value of Panamanian coffee in the past three years has reached 25 million US dollars. Of the coffee exported, 21% went to mainland China, 15% to the United States, and 13% to Taiwan.
At the same time, in the past three years, Panama's coffee exports to mainland China have grown rapidly, with an average annual growth rate of 33%. Data show that in 2020, Panama’s coffee exports to mainland China will be US$1.9 million, and in the first nine months of 2022, this figure will reach US$4.5 million.
Carlos Abrego, National Coordinator for the Coffee and Cocoa Sector at the Panama Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development (MIDA), noted that Panama's coffee exports are mainly Arabica coffee (café arábigo), produced in the Chiriqui province of Panama.
In addition, the robusta coffee (café robusta) produced in Panama is also popular in the international market.
