Canada to amend rules on the use of food additives containing aluminium

On March 9, 2023, Health Canada released Proposal NOP/ADP-0040, which proposes to amend the rules for the use of aluminum-containing food additives for a comment period ending May 22, 2023. The main contents are as follows: 


(1) Revision of the list of allowable anticoagulants. Remove all permitted uses of calcium aluminum silicate; 

(2) Remove all permitted uses of sodium aluminum phosphate from the list of permitted emulsifiers, gelling agents, stabilizers or thickeners; 

(3) Remove aluminum sulfate from canned crab meat, lobster, salmon, shrimp, tuna, kimchi and other foods all permitted uses; Delete the regulations on the use of ammonium aluminum sulfate in kimchi and non-standard food; 

(4) The specific content to be revised is shown in the table below.
