Recently, at the 24th International Blueberry Consulting Seminar held by Blueberries Consulting, Luis Miguel Vegas, general manager of the Peruvian Blueberry Producers and Exporters Association (Proarándanos), said that blueberries have become Peru's largest export agricultural product, and Peruvian fresh blueberries are exported this season. The volume will reach 287,000 tons, and the export value will exceed 1.4 billion US dollars. According to the International Blueberry Organization (International Blueberry Organization), Peru will export 275,000 tons of blueberries in 2022, ranking first in the world's blueberry exporters for the fourth consecutive year.
Peru currently exports more than 20 varieties of blueberries to more than 30 markets around the world. In recent years, Peru has been trying to open up new markets as its blueberry production has grown. Currently, negotiations are underway for entry into Indonesia, Japan, South Africa, South Korea, New Zealand, Vietnam, Argentina, Bolivia, Dominican Republic, Ecuador and Australia. Vegas also said Peru would continue to expand promotions in key markets such as the United States and China to prevent further price declines.
As far as exports to China are concerned, since the start of the current production season last June, Peru has exported 26,027 tons of blueberries to China. Although exports usually peak between August and December, small quantities of blueberries continue to be shipped to destination markets in the following months. China imported 27,074 tons of Peruvian blueberries in the 2021/22 season and will remain its third largest export market this season.
In terms of prices, China was still the import market that paid the highest prices for Peruvian blueberries last year. The United States and the European Union are Peru's first and second largest import markets, with a price of about US$4.8/kg, while China's import price is US$5.97/kg. Prices tend to fluctuate depending on the month of purchase, being lowest at US$5.32/kg in December, the peak season, and highest at US$8.53/kg in June, the off-season. Overall, the price of Peruvian blueberries has been on a downward trend since the previous season, when the price exported to China was US$6.38/kg. The increase in export volume is the main reason for the price drop.
