South Africa proposed the Regulations Relating to the Labelling and Advertising of Foodstuffs

On April 14, 2023, the South African Department of Health issued Announcement No. 48428, planning to formulate Regulations Relating to the Labelling and Advertising of Foodstuffs. The main contents include:


(1) Terms and definitions;


(2) General regulations on food labeling, such as mandatory and recommended labeling elements (food name and type, place of origin, ingredients or ingredients, production date and shelf life, etc.), detailed labeling requirements (such as font, font size, background color, marked position), etc.;


(3) Labeling requirements for nutrition labels (including conditions for use of nutrition claims, requirements for making nutritional content tables, etc.);


(4) Special labeling requirements for some products (such as alcoholic beverages, infant formula, etc.).

The feedback period for this announcement is 3 months from the date of publication.
