Argentina revised rules on trans fatty acids in food

On 19 May 2023, the Secretariat of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries of Argentina and the Secretariat of Health and Quality issued joint resolution 16/2023, amending the provisions of Codex Alimentarius on trans fatty acids in food. The resolution entered into force the day after its publication in the Official Gazette of the Argentine Republic. Main contents:

 

(1) To amend Article 155 of the “Argentine Codex Alimentarius” to limit the amount of industrially produced trans fatty acids in food, including trans fatty acids used as ingredients and raw materials, to 2 per cent of total fat. These restrictions do not apply to ruminant fats, including milk fat. Prohibit the use of partially hydrogenated oils in the production of food, ingredients and raw materials;

 

(2) Give the enterprise 2 years to meet the requirement of 2% limit of trans fatty acids in food, and 3 years to meet the requirement of 2% limit of trans fatty acids in raw materials; The use of partially hydrogenated oils and fats in food should be banned within four years.
