On May 25, 2023, the Swiss National Secretariat for Economic Affairs SECO-Federal Food Safety and Veterinary Office (FSVO) issued circular G/SPS/N/CHE/91 to revise the regulations on food of animal origin. Major revisions include:

(1) Snails of the families Helicodae, Hygromiidae or Spincterochildae are included in the list of snails allowed for human consumption. Frog legs of the genus Pelophylax in the family Ranaidae, as well as those of the genera Fejervarya, Limnonectes and Hoplobatrachus in the family Ranaidae, are included in the list of animals permitted for human consumption. Due to changing eating habits, frog legs and snails of other species were also produced and put on the market for human consumption. Therefore, specific health rules should be expanded to include these species to ensure the safety of food from these species.

(2) The revised content will be adopted on August 31, 2023, and it is planned to issue a communiqué on November 23, 2023, which will take effect on January 1, 2024.
