South Africa issued a number of food standards or management regulations

On June 2, 2023, the South African Ministry of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development issued a number of food standards or management regulations. The main contents are as follows:


(1) Announcement Nos. R3478, 3479, 3481, 3483, and 3484, respectively formulating regulations on the management of export of grains, export of animal-derived food, export of processed food, export of nuts, and export of fresh vegetables. The main content of the regulations includes: scope of application, definitions and terms, application and approval procedures for export licenses, pre-export inspection and laboratory testing requirements, handling of unqualified export foods, issuance and management of export certificates, penalties, etc. Regulations come into force on the date of publication in the Government Gazette;


(2) Report No. R3480, formulating standards and regulations for dried fruit. It mainly includes: applicable product range, that is, domestic or imported fruits sold in South Africa; product classification, terms and definitions, among which fruits refer to fresh fruits that have been processed by selection, cleaning, cutting, hot air or vacuum freeze drying, etc. It is allowed to add sugar, sweetener, preservatives or other food additives to the obtained food; the cleaning and quarantine requirements of raw raw fruits; the hygienic requirements of the product production and processing process; the sensory quality requirements and quality grading standards of products, such as all types of products Generally, the moisture content should not exceed 25%; transportation and packaging regulations; label requirements, such as the common name of the raw fruit, the country (region) of origin, batch number and other information should be displayed on the label. You cannot use the product name of dried fruit, etc.


The standard regulations come into force 12 months from the date of publication in the Government Gazette.
