On June 20, 2023, the British Food Standards Agency and the Scottish Food Standards Agency announced that a new product control system was launched for food that needs to be authorized before sale; the new system will operate from the date of the announcement.

The new system helps businesses follow the correct procedures when obtaining the necessary authorization to sell regulated foods. It is designed to make it easier for applicants to submit the information required for high-quality, complete product applications and to be able to see the progress of their applications. Applicants will also be notified of regular updates. Foods that require authorization before sale are as follows:

(1) Condiments;

(2) Foods made from genetically modified organisms (GMO);

(3) Irradiated foods;

(4) New foods;

(5) Smoked seasonings.
