In the first half of 2023, China will still be the main export market for Myanmar mangoes, and the dominant variety is the Sein Ta Lone mango.

U Myint Oo, head of the Lawksawk mango production and exporter in Myanmar's Shan State, said that Myanmar's mango exports were driven by strong demand for the fruit in the Chinese market, which absorbed most of Myanmar's mango exports. According to statistics from Lawksawk, Shan State alone has exported more than 2,000 tons of San Delong mangoes to China this year.

The mango harvest season in Shan State lasts from June to July, and it is now drawing to a close. Mandalay, which is adjacent to Shan State, is the earliest place where Myanmar's mangoes ripen. The mango season lasts from April to June every year, and the harvest has been completed at the beginning of this month.

According to Myanmar media reports, in early April, the price of mangoes exported to China was 120-180 yuan/box (16kg/box), and the specific price fluctuated according to the quality. At the end of April, the price dropped to an average of 100-120 yuan per box. The quality of mangoes is an important factor in determining the price of Burmese mangoes in the Chinese market. However, while local growers are concerned about high production costs, the fruit quality has been affected to a certain extent. For example, in order to control costs last year, black spots appeared on many mangoes after harvesting, and this year's flower bud damage led to a sharp drop in production, all of which have affected mango prices.

The Muse-Ruili Port is the main trade channel between Shan State and Yunnan Province. In May this year, more than 50 mango trucks entered China through the port every day. Myanmar's mango exports mainly rely on the Chinese market, and a small amount is shipped to Singapore, Thailand and Russia.

There are more than 200 mango varieties in Myanmar, and the planting area exceeds 104,000 hectares. Among them, the San Delong variety has become the main commercial variety, while there are a small number of other varieties. Experts in the Myanmar mango industry suggest that growers improve fruit quality and packaging in order to gain more market share in China in the future.
