On July 14, 2023, the Japanese Consumer Agency announced that it has allowed the labeling of special purpose foods in accordance with the provisions of Article 43, paragraph 1, of the Health Promotion Law.
Special purpose foods are foods that claim to be suitable for special purposes, such as the development of infants, young children, pregnant women and sick people, and the maintenance and restoration of health. In order to be sold as a special purpose food, a government license must be obtained before it can be labeled.
