The United Kingdom has lifted enhanced inspections of Brazilian meat products after analyzing the country's control systems, according to Food Safety News.
The decision covers beef, poultry, meat products and products exported from Brazil to England, Scotland and Wales. This follows a UK audit of Brazil's sanitary and phytosanitary controls.
Following allegations of fraud in Brazil during Operation Carne Fraca in 2017, the UK implemented measures to strengthen checks on certain imported animal products.
For beef and poultry products from Brazil, exports to the UK no longer require enhanced pre - and post-import salmonella testing, nor additional certification attached to health certificates confirming salmonella sampling, analytical methods used and results.
The number of microbial failures in poultry products in Brazil will be three in 2020, five in 2021 and four in January-October 2022. In 2022, Brazil exported $282.2 million of poultry meat and about $134.5 million of beef to the United Kingdom. Since the Brexit meeting, Brazilian agricultural exports to the UK have increased by 67%, reaching $1.8 billion in 2022.
