Brazil plans to formulate technical regulations on characteristics and quality of milk beverages

On August 1, 2023, the Brazilian Government Gazette website published SDA Decree No.857, which proposed to formulate technical regulations on the characteristics and quality of milk beverages. The main contents of the draft regulations include:


1. Product definition and classification. According to the heat treatment method, it can be divided into pasteurized milk drinks, sterilized milk drinks, and UHT sterilized milk drinks; according to the source of ingredients, it can be divided into milk drinks without added non-dairy ingredients and milk drinks with added non-dairy ingredients;


2. Requirements for the use of raw and auxiliary materials. The content of milk or ingredients derived from milk in the product shall not be less than 51%, and the added amount of starch, modified starch or gelatin shall not exceed 1%, etc.;


3. Sensory and physical and chemical properties. The total amount of milk fat in milk drinks without added non-dairy ingredients shall not be lower than 2g/100g; the content of milk protein in milk drinks that use non-dairy ingredients but have similar sensory properties to products without additions shall not be less than 1.7g/100g; milk fat The total amount should not be less than 2g/100g, etc.;


4. Microbial hygiene standards (see the table below for details);


5. Labeling requirements. The product type and heat treatment method should be marked, and the sales name of the product should include the name of the ingredients or flavoring substances that give the product a distinctive feature. The label of fermented milk beverages should indicate the explanatory words "this product is not yogurt" or "milk beverage is not yogurt", etc. ;


6. Packaging storage and transportation regulations, etc.


The feedback period for the draft regulation is 45 days.
