On August 14, 2023, the Ministry of Health of Sri Lanka issued the "Food (Trans Fat) Regulations (2022)", prohibiting and restricting the use of foods rich in trans fat, and it will take effect on January 1, 2024. This regulation does not apply to exported food. At present, food manufacturers, sellers, and distributors of trans fats have a grace period of 6 months. The main contents of the regulation include:

Prohibit the sale of packaged food containing trans fat, unless the total content of trans fat per 100g or 100ml of food is declared on the label;

Prohibit the sale of foods with trans fat content exceeding 2% of the total fat content in food (excluding natural trans fat in animal source fat);

Production, import, transportation, distribution, storage and sale of partially hydrogenated oil are prohibited;

Prohibit the use of partially hydrogenated oils in prepared foods or as food ingredients. However, if natural trans fat is used in food or as a food ingredient, its iodine value (an index to measure the degree of unsaturation of a substance (such as oil)) once it is greater than 4 will not be considered as a joint part Hydrogenated oils, unless they have been hydrogenated and are not fully or nearly fully saturated.
