Recently, the Verkhovna Rada (Parliament) of Ukraine passed the law "On the Control of National Genetic Engineering Activities, Genetically Modified Organisms and the Circulation of Genetically Modified Products to Ensure Food Safety".
This law is based on the eight main EU laws in the field of genetically modified organisms. The implementation of this law will bring the Ukrainian legislation on the treatment of GMOs into systemic compatibility with EU legislation and introduce the European mechanism for the national registration of GMOs. After the law takes effect, the planting and distribution of genetically modified corn will be permanently prohibited; within 5 years from the date of entry into force of the law, the planting and distribution of genetically modified sugar beets and rapeseed will be prohibited.
In addition, according to EU legislation, the requirements for the use of labels such as "GMO-containing", "GMO-free", and "Produced with GMO raw materials" are also stipulated, so that consumers can understand the product and have the right to make a choice.
The implementation of this law will help improve the efficiency and transparency of the country's regulatory procedures in the field of genetically modified organisms, formulate clear and transparent rules for carrying out work related to genetically modified organisms, and regulate the market of genetically modified organisms.
This law will come into effect on the date of promulgation, and will come into force three years after the date of entry into force. A national register of GMOs managed by the Ministry of Agricultural Policy is being created.
