On 11 September 2023, Food Standards Australia and New Zealand issued Circular 260-23, proposing to amend the requirements for sugar nutrition claims in food (i.e. P1062). The specific revisions are as follows:

(1) The condition for the food to be declared "low sugar" is that the sugar content in liquid food is <2.5g/100ml or in solid food is <5g/100g;

(2) the requirement for a food to make a "less sugar or reduced sugar" claim is that the sugar content of the product is at least 25% less than that of the reference food;

(3) the condition for the food to be declared "no added sugar" is that there is no artificial addition of any sugar, dried fruit, fruit powder, juice, fruit puree, pulp or a mixture of the above ingredients in the product;

(4) The condition for the food to be declared "no sweetener" is that the product has not added any sugars (including monosaccharides or disaccharides), strong sweeteners, etc. The proposal is subject to a comment period ending October 3, 2023.
