Ukraine proposed amendments to 2 food regulations

On September 13, 2023, the Ministry of Health of Ukraine issued a consultation document, proposing to revise two food regulations, and the feedback period is 30 days, the main contents are as follows:

 

(1) Formulate regulations on ionizing radiation food requirements, including the scope of application; The ionizing radiation sources allowed to be used are radionuclear isotopes 60Co or 137Cs (gamma radiation), the maximum energy of 5MeVX rays, etc. Different food irradiation treatment requirements, such as dried herbs, spices and vegetable seasonings, the maximum absorbed radiation dose is 10Gy; Requirements on the label of irradiated food, such as food sold in the form of separate packaging, labels marked with the words "irradiation" or "ionization treatment", ingredients after irradiation should be marked with the words "irradiation" or "ionization treatment" next to the ingredients list; The irradiation enterprise must record the origin and quantity, batch number, production enterprise, irradiation days and other information of the processed food after the ionizing radiation treatment; Requirements for imports of irradiated food from third countries, such as imported food should be accompanied by official documents indicating the name and address of the irradiation enterprise, irradiation information, etc.;

 

(2) To amend the regulations on food additives, the main content of which is to stipulate that dyes E161g xanthine and E171 titanium dioxide are prohibited from being used in food; The use of ethylene oxide for sterilization of food supplements is prohibited, and the sum of ethylene oxide and 2-chloroethanol does not exceed 0.1mg/kg (expressed in ethylene oxide); The labels of foods with added sweeteners must include the names of the sweeteners they contain; Ingredients containing polyols warning: "Excessive consumption may produce nervous breakdown"; Contains aspartame or aspartame-acetylsulfanilate: "contains phenylalanine source", etc.
