Turkey to develop regulations on the safety of food supplements

On November 3, 2023, the General Directorate of Food Safety and Control of Turkey issued Circular No. 536, seeking comments on the draft Regulation on the safety management of food supplements, for a feedback period up to November 30, 2023.

 

The main contents of the Bill include definitions and terminology, food supplement production and operation enterprises (including importers) and product registration application conditions, official safety assessment and approval procedures, production and processing and inspection requirements, product traceability requirements, prohibited production, sale or import of food supplements category (that is, for people under 2 years of age to eat products), regulatory authorities Food supplement labeling and advertising requirements (such as labels should mark the product type, suitable population, active substance content, daily recommended intake, necessary warnings, etc.), special requirements for some products (such as solid supplements for 2-3 year old children can only be provided in the form of effervescent tablets, and food additives are not allowed).

 

Annex 1 of the draft also lists the categories of substances that are allowed to be used as food supplements, including vitamins, minerals, amino acids, enzymes, plant extraction active substances, probiotics and other 10 categories of ingredients, and Annex 2 lists the ingredients that are prohibited to be used as food supplements, including 17 substances such as cannabidiol.
