On November 24, 2023, the Australian Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (DAFF) issued a circular to revise the import information of sports supplements such as protein powder.

The Australian Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) considers certain sports supplements in tablet, capsule or pill form to be therapeutic products and must be included in the Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods (ARTG). The TGA considers therapeutic uses to include, but are not limited to, the following functions, including gaining muscle, increasing metabolism, increasing endurance, changing hormone levels, injury repair, and weight loss or fat loss. From 30 November 2023, sports supplements tested under the imported Food Inspection Scheme and assessed as tablets, capsules or pills within the scope of the new requirements will be submitted to the TGA.

The amendment will take effect from 24 November 2023.
