On 25 January 2024, the Kenya Bureau of Standards (KBS) established five food standards. Specifically, DEAS 954-2023 for meat sausages, DEAS 1186-2023 for edible insects, DEAS 1187-2023 for edible offal, DEAS 1188-2023 for edible natural sausage casings and DEAS 1189-2023 for cured meats, with a comment period ending on 25 March 2024, respectively.
The main contents include: product terminology, definitions and classification, general requirements and quality indicators, hygiene standards and heavy metal limit requirements (see the following table for some of the limit requirements), packaging and labelling requirements, sampling and testing methods, etc.
