On 4 March 2024, the Brazilian Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply published, through the Official Gazette, Resolution SDA/MAPA No 1023, which establishes the criteria for the characteristics and quality of beverages, acetate fermentation products, wines and their derivatives, and which will come into force on 1 April 2024, and which will be applied to products imported or domestically produced and sold in Brazil.
The regulation applies to products imported or domestically produced and sold in Brazil, and includes definitions and terminology, product classification (alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages according to the presence or absence of alcohol, and fermented and non-fermented beverages according to the process, etc.), organoleptic and quality requirements for the products (e.g., non-alcoholic beverages should not have an alcohol content of more than 0.5%), and requirements for the use of raw materials and auxiliaries (colours and flavours are prohibited for wines, and types of sugars that may be added to wines that are allowed to be sweetened).
The types of sugar that can be added to wine include: sucrose, invert sugar, dextrose, fructose, maltose and other sugars and their redox products), health standards (e.g. arsenic <0.2mg/L, lead <0.3mg/L, copper <1mg/L, iron <15mg/L, zinc <5mg/L, etc.), the requirements for the registration of beverage and wine producers, importers and exporters, and the requirements for product labelling. The Brazilian government's supervision and management of producers and products (including imported and exported products), sampling and testing methods, and so on.
