CAC to revise oil and fat standards

On May 23, 2024, the Codex Alimentarius Commission (CAC) issued consultation document CL2024/39-FO, proposing to revise the standards for oils and fats, with a comment period ending June 30, 2025. The main revisions are:

 

(1) The addition of vegetable oil standards: palm oil with a higher oleic acid content must have an oleic acid content of ≥48% (as a percentage of total fatty acids); the cholesterol in the standard of vegetable oil was revised from 2.2-4.7mg/kg to 1.7-4.7mg/kg; the stigasterol was modified from 11.5-15.5mg/kg to 11.2-15.5mg/kg; the δ-tocotrienol was modified from 35-61 to 33-86mg/kg.

 

(2) Change the wax content of virgin olive oil from ≤250mg/kg to ≤150mg/kg; Stigma diene content was changed from 0.15mg/kg to 0.05mg/kg.

 

(3) The acidity of virgin palm oil is 5.0% (based on palmitic acid), and the acidity value of crude palm kernel oil is determined to be 4.0% (based on lauric acid); Delete virgin palm Oil and its corresponding acid value (10.0mg KOH/g Oil);

 

(4) The maximum limit of fatty acid polytriglyceride (INS 475) in fats was revised from 600mg/kg to 10000mg/kg.
