South Korea plans to extend the application of the SAFE-i24 system to all imported food

On May 20, 2024, the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS) of the Republic of Korea announced that it will extend the application of the "Electronic Audit 24 (SAFE-i24)" system to all imported food products, which currently only applies to food additives, agricultural and livestock products and aquatic products. 


The system can automatically inspect and declare food with low probability of harm and multiple imports, the specific declaration process is as follows: When the food importer submits the import declaration form, the system will automatically review about 270 items such as the first import inspection history, the use of prohibited ingredients, and the history of nonconformity. If the result is qualified, it will automatically pass and issue the import declaration certificate. In the event of ineligibility due to electronic inspection, the imported food inspector will perform a re-verification procedure.

 

The object conditions of automatic declaration acceptance:

 

(1) imported food that is not imported for the first time and subject to document inspection;

 

(2) There is no need for additional on-site, precision, random sampling inspection;

 

(3) The electronic review results are appropriate.
