On July 12, 2024, the Brazilian National Health Supervision Agency (ANVISA) website released the 4th edition of the "Guidelines for the Implementation of Food Nutrition Labeling Regulations" (also known as the "Food Nutrition Labeling Regulations and Questions and Answers", which is a compliance guidance document for manufacturers and distributors, and a supporting document for the official competent authorities to carry out supervision). Key elements of the update include:

(1) Revise the labeling requirements for sweeteners on food nutrition labels, stipulating that monosaccharides or disaccharides added externally and used as sweeteners should be counted as part of the total sugar content and labeled on the nutrition label, except for added lactose, and the product label should state the warning "contains monosaccharides or disaccharides, diabetes patients should be careful to eat";

(2) Amend the categories of prepackaged foods exempted from nutrition labelling by providing that the exemption does not apply to prepackaged foods that have been fortified, reconstituted after processing or contain bioactive ingredients;

(3) New specific requirements for the nutrition label of certain special use foods, such as the lactose content must be marked on the nutrition label of foods with lactose removal or semi-lactose removal;

(4) The labeling requirements of exogenous sugars added as dietary fiber on nutrition labels have been revised.

The guidelines enter into force on the date of publication.
