Melbourne's first drone delivery service launched recently. Customers will be able to get a variety of goods delivered by air, including Friday night takeaways, morning coffee and even a carton of eggs.

Food delivery app DoorDash has partnered with drone delivery provider Wing to provide a faster, greener delivery option to 26 urban areas in Melbourne's east. The foam drones, which weigh about five kilograms, travel up to seven kilometers from their base (QIC's Eastland Shopping Centre), carry a load of about a kilogram, and fly at speeds of up to 110 kilometers per hour.Wing spokesman Jesse Sukin said he was excited to bring the drone delivery service to Melbourne after running the program successfully in southeast Queensland since 2019.

Sukin hopes that other parts of Melbourne will eventually get the same service. He also mentioned that these drones cost the same as regular deliveries and meet noise control standards. “If you're at home, you probably won't even hear the drone flying over.”

Eastland Shopping Centre will be home to 18 self-flying drones, a manager/pilot will look after the drones during flights, and the base will also be staffed with maintenance personnel.
