48,000 detained as China intensifies fight against food, drug, environment crimes

BEIJING, Dec. 3 (Xinhua) -- Chinese police have detained around 48,000 suspects involved in crimes in areas of food, drugs, the environment and intellectual property rights since a nationwide crackdown was launched in July, the Ministry of Public Security (MPS) announced Tuesday.

As of the end of November, 27,800 criminal cases involving a total value of 28.3 billion yuan (around 4.03 billion U.S. dollars) had been cracked, over 11,300 illegal factories and workshops destroyed, and about 5,200 criminal gangs busted, said the ministry.

Police across the country, in collaboration with local market, agriculture and environment regulators, have solved a number of major cases and dealt a heavy blow to crimes related to food, drugs, the environment and intellectual property rights, said Liu Yuejin, a senior official with the MPS.
