The U.S. releases the final revision of the lead and copper regulations in the National Level 1 Drinking Water Regulations
According to the U.S. Federal Register, on January 15, 2021, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency issued Regulation No. 2020-28691, which determined the final revision of the lead and copper regulations in the National Level 1 Drinking Water Regulations.
These revised requirements provide better and more effective protection for public health by reducing exposure to lead and copper in drinking water. The regulations will better identify high levels of lead, improve the reliability of lead tap sampling results, strengthen corrosion control processing requirements, expand consumer awareness and improve risk communication. For the first time, this final regulation requires community water systems to conduct drinking water lead detection and public education in schools and childcare facilities. In addition, the regulation will speed up the replacement of lead introduction pipelines by eliminating existing regulatory loopholes, promoting early action and strengthening replacement requirements.
