Japan plans to revise food labeling standards
On November 2, 2021, the Consumer Affairs Agency (CAA) of Japan issued an announcement to revise the food labeling standards. The feedback period is 60 days after the WTO Secretariat distributes it. The main revisions are:
(1) Since high-oleic acid soybeans can be produced through conventional planting, high-oleic acid recombinant soybeans no longer belong to the definition of “specific genetically modified agricultural products”, and some food labeling standards will be revised;
(2) As genetically modified mustard food is expected to circulate in Japan, some food labeling standards will be revised to make GMO mustard subject to GMO labels;
(3) Due to the revision of the "Japanese Food Composition Standards Table" and the adoption of new nutrient composition analysis methods, some food labeling standards will be revised;
(4) The Japanese Agricultural Standard (JAS Standard) is in line with international standards, and the JAS standards for soy sauce and edible vegetable oils have been partially revised.
